The Rise of the Milwaukee Bucks

The Milwaukee Bucks have came a long way from being in the lottery and in the rebuilding phase to being an 6th seeded playoff team. The Bucks started back in the 2014 NBA Draft. They had the 2nd pick of the draft and they picked the most "NBA ready" player in Jabari Parker from Duke University. That same summer of 2014, the Bucks acquired head coach Jason Kidd from a trade with the Brooklyn Nets.On December 15, Jabari Parker tore his ACL and was out for the season. On the last day of the trade deadline, the Bucks were a part of a 3-way trade with the Phoenix Suns and Philadelphia 76ers. The Bucks sent Brandon Knight, who was in his final year of his contract, while the Bucks received Michael Carter-Williams, Miles Plumlee, and Tyler Ennis. By the end of the season, the Bucks finished the season 41-41 with a 6th seed versus the 3rd seeded Chicago Bulls. The Bucks lost to the Bulls in six games. In this free agency, the Bucks signed free agent Greg Monroe for a 3-year $50 million contract and resigned Khris Middleton for a 5-year $70 million contract. The Bucks will be a team to look forward to watching because they have the correct players to give some teams a challenge and make a deeper run in the playoffs. The Bucks also revealed their new logo and new home and away uniforms. How good will the Milwaukee Bucks be this upcoming season?

How Good Will Jabari Parker Be?

On December 15, last season, the Milwaukee Bucks were squaring off against the Phoenix Suns. Jabari Parker tore his ACL running on a fastbreak early in the 3rd quarter. Before he was injured Parker was averaging 12.3 ppg, 5.5 rpg, and shooting 49% from the field. Let me shed some background information on who Jabari Parker is. Parker is a 6'8, 240 pound forward from Chicago, Illinois and went to Simeon High School, where he won 4 consecutive state championships. Jabari then chose to commit and play for Coach Mike Krzyzewski and the Duke Blue Devils. Parker helped the Blue Devils reach the NCAA Tournament, but was then upset by #14 Mercer University in the first round. Parker decided to declare for the 2014 NBA Draft, along with other stars like Andrew Wiggins and Joel Embiid. Prior of the draft, Parker signed a shoe endorsement deal with the Jordan Brand. Parker made his NBA debut on October 29, 2014 versus the Charlotte Hornets in an 106-108 overtime loss where he scored 8 points, grabbed 4 rebounds, gave an assist, and got a steal. After the draft, in the 2014-2015 NBA.com Rookie Survey at the Rookie Photo Shoot, Jabari Parker was also named by his colleagues as both to most win Rookie of the Year and most likely to have the best NBA career. Now that you know how good Jabari Parker is, it will be amazing how big of an impact he will bring to the Bucks this upcoming season; while also adding Greg Monroe, who was previously a Detroit Piston. Having Parker back will give the Bucks that extra spark to get past teams and contend for a NBA title, but for now we must ask how good will Jabari Parker be?

Could Spurs Win Sixth Title?

As of now, the San Antonio Spurs are at the top of the list of teams that have the highest chance on winning a championship in 2016. During this year's Free Agency period, the Spurs have resigned Kawhi Leonard to a 5-year $95 million contract, Danny Green to a 4-year $45 million contract, and Manu Ginobili to a 2-year $5 million contract. The Spurs also managed to obtain 4x All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge to a 4-year $84 million contract and former Pacers forward David West. With adding Aldridge, the Spurs could be a hard to beat, especially in the tough western conference. Duncan and Aldridge could be the next best frontcourt 1-2 punch since 1997, when David Robinson and Tim Duncan teamed up to win 2 NBA Titles. Aldridge has a nice mid-range, has good post moves, and is solid on defense. Some have compared Aldridge to Duncan because of his footwork, range around 15 feet, and his solid touch in the low post. The Spurs will be a team to look forward to watch this season, but the question remains; Will Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs win a 6th NBA Title?

Review on the 2015 NBA Draft (1st-10th)

1. Minnesota Timberwolves:
Karl Anthony-Towns/Kentucky
Pick:✔
Strengths: Towns' defensive style of play will
help increase the Timberwolves' defensive ratings because they were the worst defensive team last season. Towns can help increase the blocks per game and allow fewer points from their opponents.

Weaknesses: Towns needs to improve on post play, footwork, and confidence in the low post. He also has the tendency to be in foul trouble, which can be bad because he can't sit out when he is needed on the floor.

NBA Comparison: Andrew Bogut/Vlade Divac

2. Los Angeles Lakers
D'Angelo Russell/Ohio State
Pick:✔
Strengths: At 6 foot 5 inches tall and weighs in at 180 pounds, Russell is a guard that has the height to see over the defense to score at will or set up teammates. He also has the size to play shooting guard, when Kobe is on the bench. He's a decent shooter from mid and 3 point range.

Weaknesses: Russell has trouble finishing in transition, he can fix this solution with changing speeds, adding strength to his legs, and increase explosiveness. He also needs to work on his off-hand and shot selection. Lastly, he needs more intensity on the defensive end of the floor.

NBA Comparison: Penny Hardaway/Brandon Roy

3. Philadelphia 76ers
Jahlil Okafor/Duke
Pick:✔
Strengths: As a Sixer, Okafor will be in the starting frontcourt with former Kentucky Wildcat Nerlens Noel. Okafor has phenomenal footwork and ball handling as a center, especially when he's going to be trapped. He also has some decent post moves and hands that allow him to control the ball at will.

Weaknesses: Okafor happens to struggle at the free throw line and has trouble defending the pick-and-roll. He also lacks athleticism, which will hurt him on defense. even though he is great in the post, a hook shot or bank shot would give him more scoring options on offense.

NBA Comparison: Brook Lopez/Al Jefferson

4. New York Knicks
Kristaps Porzingis/Latvia
Pick: X
Strengths: Porzingis is a 7'1, 220 pound forward from Latvia. Porzingis excels at shooting the mid-range and from behind the arc. He is also athletic, who can finish above the rim and can catch and finish lobs in a half court setting or in transition. He can run the floor efficiently and can protect the rim when he's locked in. Porzingis has upside and is mobile for a 7 footer.

Weaknesses: Porzingis lacks strength, which is needed for him to develop post moves and box out for rebounds. He also lacks at finishing around the basket.

NBA Comparison: Andrea Bargnani/Pau Gasol

The Knicks should have selected Emmanuel Mudiay because he has a Russell Westbrook type of play style, who is athletic and can finish at the basket at will. Since Raymond Felton was traded, the Knicks have struggled with getting a backcourt to control the offense, which is where Mudiay could have been able to do if he was picked.

5. Orlando Magic
Mario Hezonja/Croatia
Pick: X
Strengths: At 6'8, 215 pounds, Hezonja has a great height for a shooting guard or small forward. He has a defensive upside by using his speed and quick hands; can slash the ball well. Hezonja is an average rebounder for his size and can be reliable in the late game situations.

Weaknesses: He struggles of having a mid-range game and needs to work on off ball defense. He needs to make sure his cocky attitude won't get him in trouble on the court. He tends to shoot first rather than finding an open man.

NBA Comparison: Rex Chapman

The Magic should have selected Kristaps Porzingis because the Magic have already set up their backcourt of the future in Elfrid Payton and Victor Oladipo. They need more shooters and rebounders, which Porzingis can be if he builds muscle.

6. Sacramento Kings
Willie Cauley-Stein/Kentucky
Pick: X
Strengths: Cauley-Stein is more of a defensive center rather than a center who can score. He has
great size at 7'2 and is a quick leaper. He excels at hedging pick and roll's and can protect the rim too. He has managed to improve at the free throw line and has a decent jump hook from the low post. WCS has the potential to guard wing positions and is a strong finisher around the rim.

Weaknesses: WCS doesn't have any offensive skills other than a jump hook. Mostly seen as a lob finisher, roll man, and garbage man in an NBA offense. His touch and shooting are his real weaknesses in terms of game speed.

NBA Comparison: Chris Anderson/Samuel Dalembert

The Kings should have selected Mario Hezonja because the Kings' backcourt isn't good enough to compete against the backcourts in the tough western conference. Him and Rajon Rondo could be a decent backcourt facing up against elite guards.

7. Denver Nuggets
Emmanuel Mudiay/Congo
Pick:✔
Strengths: Mudiay is a 6'5, 200 pound point guard from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, who played for the Guangdong Southern Tigers in China. Mudiay has a rare combination of size, speed, agility, and athleticism to go with great vision and mentality for a point guard. He has good ability to push the ball on the break with explosiveness to finish at the rim. Mudiay has a size advantage when posting up smaller guards. Has the ability to finish with either hands. Gives strong effort consistently and has a lot of confidence.

Weaknesses: Mudiay has struggled with his mid range and outside shooting. Most of those shots are off balance and struggles with the timing of his release at the highest point of his jump. While playing for the Southern Tigers in China, Mudiay shot 34.2% from outside and 57.4% from the free throw line. Also, needs to decrease his turnover numbers in order to be an efficient NBA point guard.

NBA Comparison: John Wall
8. Detroit Pistons
Stanley Johnson/Arizona
Pick;✔
Strengths: Johnson is a versatile, two-way player and has tremendous upside. He has great physical attributes and size at 6'6, 242 pounds. SJ can combine speed, quickness, and power at a high level. Johnson has great footwork and can score however he wants. He has the ability to make jump shots off the dribble, pulling up, or spotting up. He's kind of like a LeBron in transition because of his speed, quickness, size, and strength. He is excellent at moving off the ball and rebounds well for a wing player. He is a excellent ball defender when he is locked in defensively.

Weaknesses: Johnson needs to improve on his ability to finish at the rim. Tends to settle for floaters too often. Needs to be an accurate passer and improve his left hand in terms of ball-handling and finishing. Forgets sometimes about his teammates because he wants to be known as a scorer. Needs to develop a more consistent jumper from mid-range and downtown. Gets beat off the dribble too often.

NBA Comparison: Kawhi Leonard/Ron Artest

9. Charlotte Hornets
Frank Kaminsky/Wisconsin
Pick:✔
Strengths: Kaminsky has great footwork and can go left and right and is great at using his size on offense. He can shoot consistently from mid-range and downtown. He lacks quickness and explosiveness, but makes up for it by using his high basketball IQ. A perfect player to use on a pick-and-pop, especially with Kemba Walker. He has an underrated attribute which is passing. He's also able to go by defenders on close outs and can attack you from off the dribble.

Weaknesses: Kaminsky lacks athleticism and not sure if he can survive in a iso oriented offense where he won't be getting the ball at times. Can guard centers, but since he's a 4, he would have a disadvantage because of how quicker and explosive they are. Another concern is how can he withstand the physicality of NBA power forwards on both ends of the floor. While he's on offense people may push him out of the blocks too easily.

NBA Comparison: Nenad Kristic/Sean Marks

10. Miami Heat
Justise Winslow/Duke
Pick:✔
Strengths: Winslow is a big-time athlete with elite level speed and athleticism. He can finish at the rim and does a great job absorbing contact. JW is dangerous in the open floor with his speed and leaping ability. He has a great basketball body and long wingspan. Just like Johnson, Winslow is an excellent on ball defender because of his lateral quickness and awareness. Does a great job on avoiding turnovers and solid decisions with the ball.

Weaknesses: Winslow tends to lose focus during games and needs to show high level of aggression and intensity in order to see his immense talent. His jump shot has potential, but has some minor issues that need to be fixed for him to add range and consistency.

NBA Comparison: James Harden/Wilson Chandler

Review on the 2015 NBA Draft Info

During the 2015 NBA Draft, there were many picks that surprised everyone. The fans of their favorite teams agreed or disagreed with the selection their team picked. In the next post, I'll be reviewing the 1st 10 picks of the 1st round of the draft and I'll determine whether if the selection was good or bad. If the pick was good or bad, I'll say what the pick will bring to the team and what he will need to work on and decide who the team should have picked and what they would have brought to that team. I will also add a player or two that compares to the selection.

Pelicans Are In!

You may not know what I mean by the title above. The New Orleans Pelicans are finally in the playoffs, their first appearance since 2011 (Chris Paul's last season). The Pelicans were racing with the Oklahoma  City Thunder to lock in as an 8th seed in the Western Conference. In order for the Pelicans to make the playoffs, they were in need of a win versus the defending champion San Antonio Spurs and were also in need of a loss by the Thunder versus the Timberwolves. Westbrook and the Thunder defeated the Timberwolves  138-111. No wonder why Anthony Davis was in this year's MVP talk because of how much energy he provides on the court and how much leadership he illustrates on the court for his team to get a win. I do not see the Pelicans giving the #1 seed Golden State Warriors any issues, but it great to see Anthony Davis in playoff contention. Pelicans front office do not need to change anything in the offseason, but they do need to pick up crucial free agents in order to climb up the Western Conference standings next year.

Farewell to Mr. 50 40 90

If you're asking "Who is Mr. 50 40 90", well to answer your question; he is 2-Time NBA Most Valuable Player Steve Nash. Nash has finally decided to hang up his jersey and retire from the NBA after playing for 19 seasons with the Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks, and Los Angeles Lakers. For his career, Nash averaged 14.3 points per game, 8.5 assists per game, and shot 90.4% from the charity strike. Let me share some background information about Nash. Steve Nash was drafted 1st Round 15th overall to the Phoenix Suns in 1996, coming from the University of California-Santa Clara. Nash spent his first 2 seasons with the Suns after being sent to the Dallas Mavericks, where he would only play for 6 seasons there. After the 2004 NBA season, Nash returned back to Phoenix to play for 8 seasons. Within those 8 seasons, Nash paired up with fellow teammate Amar'e Stoudemire to be one of the best tandems in the NBA. Also, Nash won NBA MVP in 2005 where he averaged 15.5 points per game, a career best 11.5 assists per game, and shot 88.7% from the free throw line. Nash again won NBA MVP in 2006 where he averaged a career high 18.8 points per game, 10.5 assists per game, and shot 92.1% from the free throw line. After 2012, Nash was in a sign-and-trade deal with the Lakers and began playing with 5-time NBA Champion Kobe Bryant and 3-time Defensive Player of the Year Dwight Howard. Nash averaged 9.7 points per game, 6.2 assists per game, and shot 92% from the free throw line. Lastly, Nash is considered as "Mr. 50 40 90" because he has shot at least 50% from the field, 40% from downtown, and 90% from the free throw line in 2006, 2008,2009, and 2010. Steve Nash has made plenty of fans amazed with his scoring and amazing passes.
Thank You Steve Nash for the wonderful memories!

Triple Double Machines

2015 NBA Most Valuable Player?
If you haven't been living under a rock, everyone should know that Oklahoma City Thunder's All-Star Guard Russell Westbrook has had 9 triple-doubles this season so far. His best one was on March 4, when he exploded for 49 points, 10 assists, and 16 rebounds in a win versus the Philadelphia 76ers. For all 9 of his triple-doubles, Westbrook is averaging 31.6 points per game, 12.7 assists per game, and 12.3 rebounds per game. The reason Westbrook is in the mix for league MVP is obviously because of his triple-doubles this season. Westbrook should continue his level of play in order to move up in the standings as the OKC Thunder are 8th in the Western Conference with a mediocre 38-30 record. If the league's reigning MVP, Kevin Durant, returns before playoffs begin (out for foot/ankle injury) and Westbrook is still producing at an MVP caliber; the OKC Thunder will have a slight chance of beating the league's best team, the Golden State Warriors, and making it to the Western Conference Finals or maybe moving on the NBA Finals. In addition, Russell Westbrook is not the only player that has managed to get consecutive triple-doubles in back-to-back games. Some of you won't know him, but Orlando Magic's rookie point guard Elfrid Payton, from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, has been following in Westbrook's footsteps. Payton is the first rookie since 1997 to get 2 straight triple-doubles. Payton got his first triple-double in a loss versus the Dallas Mavericks by racking up 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 12 assists. His second straight triple-double was yesterday in a win versus the Portland TrailBlazers scoring 22 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and dishing out 10 assists. Just like Westbrook, Payton should be in the Rookie of the Year mix, not MVP, if he continues his level of play like Westbrook.

This Year's NBA Rookie of the Year?

Harden Pours In 50

Yesterday was the Houston Rockets 20th Anniversary of their amazing title run in 1995. Important players that were apart of that team were there like Hakeem Olajuwon, Robert Horry, Clyde Drexler, Vernon Maxwell, Mario Elie, and coach Rudy Tomjanovic. Houston played Ty Lawson and the Denver Nuggets. Harden lead the way in scoring 50 points shooting 44.4% from the field (12-27), but not only he scored a career-high, Harden grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out 4 assists as well. With Harden scoring 50, he increases his chances of winning MVP this year over other candidates like Stephen Curry, Russell Westbrook, and LeBron James. Harden is currently #1 in the MVP race after last week he was #3 in the MVP standings. Harden is also 2nd in the scoring race, behind his former teammate Russell Westbrook with 27.6 points per game, with 27.1 points per game. Harden has also been helping his team to a 46-22 record, 3rd in the Western Conference. If Harden continues his play on both ends of the floor, he could win MVP this year and maybe lead his team to the Western Conference Finals, which hasn't been done since the 1995 Houston Rockets' title run.
What will Harden do next? This Year's MVP?

Rivers Family Reunion

As of today, the Los Angeles Clippers have acquired Celtics G Austin Rivers, son of Head Coach Doc Rivers, in a three-team with the Suns and the Celtics. In trade for Rivers, the Clippers sent forward Chris-Douglas Roberts and 2017 second round draft pick to the Celtics and forward Reggie Bullock to Phoenix. In the trade, the Celtics got for forward Shavlik Randolph. Austin Rivers was the 10th selection of the 2012 NBA Draft by New Orleans. In his first 3 seasons as a Hornet/Pelican, Rivers averaged 6.9 ppg, 2.3 apg, and shooting 39% from the field. Rivers will be a decent backup PG behind the best PG in the league, Chris Paul. Rivers stats' will probably have better numbers than he did in New Orleans. Will Rivers become an asset in the Clippers bench? Will Rivers fit in with his father's system?

Knicks cut Stat

Today, the New York Knicks have waived forward Amar'e Stoudemire. Knicks fans should feel glad he was cut because of lack of production on the court and injuries are holding him back. Knicks' All Star forward Carmelo Anthony felt another way. During an interview with Anthony, he said "Amare brought something back to New York that New York was kind of missing and needing for a long time," Anthony told reporters. "When he came, he brought back some of the excitement here for the game of basketball in New York. There was hope when he came back. People started believing in the New York Knicks once again. He was the main reason for that belief and for that hope when he first got here in New York." (from NBA.com http://www.nba.com/2015/news/02/16/knicks-buy-out-stoudemire.ap/index.html) The Dallas Mavericks are considering on getting Stoudemire. Having Stoudemire on the bench could be key and could increase the Mavs defense, if he can maintain his injuries. If I were the Mavs GM I would give Amar'e a chance to provide what he can on the court. If he doesn't provide enough, then waive him.
