Triple Double Machines

2015 NBA Most Valuable Player?
If you haven't been living under a rock, everyone should know that Oklahoma City Thunder's All-Star Guard Russell Westbrook has had 9 triple-doubles this season so far. His best one was on March 4, when he exploded for 49 points, 10 assists, and 16 rebounds in a win versus the Philadelphia 76ers. For all 9 of his triple-doubles, Westbrook is averaging 31.6 points per game, 12.7 assists per game, and 12.3 rebounds per game. The reason Westbrook is in the mix for league MVP is obviously because of his triple-doubles this season. Westbrook should continue his level of play in order to move up in the standings as the OKC Thunder are 8th in the Western Conference with a mediocre 38-30 record. If the league's reigning MVP, Kevin Durant, returns before playoffs begin (out for foot/ankle injury) and Westbrook is still producing at an MVP caliber; the OKC Thunder will have a slight chance of beating the league's best team, the Golden State Warriors, and making it to the Western Conference Finals or maybe moving on the NBA Finals. In addition, Russell Westbrook is not the only player that has managed to get consecutive triple-doubles in back-to-back games. Some of you won't know him, but Orlando Magic's rookie point guard Elfrid Payton, from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, has been following in Westbrook's footsteps. Payton is the first rookie since 1997 to get 2 straight triple-doubles. Payton got his first triple-double in a loss versus the Dallas Mavericks by racking up 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 12 assists. His second straight triple-double was yesterday in a win versus the Portland TrailBlazers scoring 22 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and dishing out 10 assists. Just like Westbrook, Payton should be in the Rookie of the Year mix, not MVP, if he continues his level of play like Westbrook.
